What Is a Dental Emergency?

We treat many types of tooth emergencies, including the following:

  • Tooth pain
  • Broken tooth
  • Jaw pain or swelling
  • Swollen or inflamed gums
  • An infected or abscessed tooth
  • Lost dental crown
  • Lost tooth filling
  • Food stuck between teeth
  • Dental trauma

It’s important to seek prompt treatment if you experience one of these problems. Waiting only allows the situation to worsen and puts your oral health and even your general health at risk.

How to Handle a Dental Emergency

At some point, just about everyone will experience a dental emergency. So, it’s helpful to know how to handle some of these situations, so you know how to react when the time comes. Knowing what to do can also help you stay calm until you see your emergency dentist.

Toothache, Jaw Pain or Swelling

Tooth pain is never normal and is always a sign that a problem is developing that requires prompt treatment. Severe tooth pain that makes it difficult to think clearly, especially if it also involves swelling, is a sign that you may be in danger of losing the tooth without prompt treatment.

For pain relief until you see your dentist, you can try store-bought pain relievers like ibuprofen or Tylenol. Rinsing your mouth with warm saltwater and applying a cold compress on the affected area can also help reduce pain and swelling.

Broken Tooth, Lost Crown or Filling

Unless these situations also involve tooth pain, you may not need to stop what you’re doing to run to the dentist. If possible, try putting the crown back on to protect the tooth until you see us. With a broken tooth or lost filling, we recommend collecting any pieces you can find and bringing them to your emergency appointment.

Food Stuck between Teeth

Sometimes, a mild toothache can result from food stuck between your teeth. Try using floss to gently remove it, but never use anything sharp or pointy to avoid injury. If you can’t easily remove the item, call us, so we can help you get rid of it safely.

Knocked-Out Tooth

A knocked-out tooth is an extremely urgent emergency. In most cases, we have an hour or less in which we might be able to save it. Don’t touch the tooth root or any attached tissue. It’s ideal to gently place the tooth back in the socket; if you can’t, hold it between your cheek and gums. You can also keep the root moist by placing it in a container of milk or saliva.
