Porcelain Veneers
Dental veneers are a great way to correct all sorts of cosmetic dental flaws. With veneers covering the fronts of your teeth, you can say goodbye to imperfections like stains, discoloration, cracks, gaps, and even slightly crooked teeth.
At Desai Family Dentistry, we customize your veneers to look like your natural teeth—only better! Even better, getting veneers requires only two visits to our Hempstead, NY, dental office, so you can see a better smile in no time!
What Are Veneers?
A veneer is a thin porcelain tooth restoration custom crafted for your unique smile. Dental porcelain is the perfect material because it mimics the look of tooth enamel. Dr. Desai works with the best custom dental labs in our area that expertly create each veneer to blend in so well with your smile that no one will ever know!
Because veneers cover the fronts of your teeth, we use them to conceal smile imperfections, including:
- Broken teeth
- Cracked teeth
- Wide or uneven gaps between teeth
- Teeth that appear too small
- Oddly-shaped teeth
- Discolored teeth
- Slight tooth misalignment
Depending on your smile goals, our cosmetic dentist might recommend a full set of veneers to cover all the teeth that show when you smile or one or two to perfect certain parts of your smile.
What’s the Process for Getting Veneers?
You can expect two visits to Desai Family Dentistry when getting veneers: one to plan and design them and a second about two weeks later to place them on your teeth.
- Veneers exam — You will meet with our cosmetic dentist so he can examine your smile and ensure you’re a good veneer candidate. We can’t just cover teeth with cavities or gum disease, so we’ll treat those underlying problems first.
- Tooth preparation — Each veneer is about the thickness of a contact lens, so we have to remove a very thin layer of tooth enamel to ensure the restoration fits properly. You’ll consult with Dr. Desai to choose the perfect white shade for your smile, and a custom lab designs your veneers to our specifications. We will create temporaries to cover and protect your teeth while the lab works on your final veneers.
- Placing your veneers — When we receive your final veneers from the lab, you’ll visit our Hempstead, NY, dental office, where we remove the temporaries, test the final veneers for fit, and cement them firmly to your teeth.
How Long Do Veneers Last?
Your veneers can last 10 years or longer with proper care. Brush twice daily, floss once, and visit us every six months for exams and teeth cleanings. At these appointments, we’ll ensure that your veneers are in good condition and that your teeth and gums are healthy.
It’s also crucial to remember that your veneers are super-thin, and the edges can crack or chip under too much force. For this reason, you should avoid biting your fingernails, eating hard or crunchy foods, and using your teeth as tools.
Veneers Are a Lifetime Commitment
Because we alter your natural teeth to fit the veneers, they are a lifetime commitment. This means you will always need something covering the teeth to protect them. If this worries you, composite veneers might be a better option because they don’t require any tooth alteration.
